Remember that song? Remember the lyrics?

Some boys take a beautiful girl
And hide her away from the rest of the world
I want to be the one to walk in the sun
Oh girls they want to have fun
When the working day is done
Girls—they want to have fun, Oh girls just want to have fun.

Whether our “working day” is spent at an office, as a full-time mommy (the harder job), or both (hardest of all), it can be long, tiring, and sometimes stressful. But yes, we girls still want to have fun.

Fun can be anything, even a simple pleasure. This year I put up a swing in our backyard. I’ve wanted one for ages and can’t imagine why I didn’t do it years ago. When I come home from the office, I take a swing, kick my legs, and look up at the sky. It gives me a feeling of exuberance and renewed energy. It’s great fun. Board games, especially Parcheesi and Rummy Q, make for a lighthearted evening. Enjoying grandchildren is a new experience for my husband and me, and our visits with them definitely are at the top of the fun scale.

What else is fun? Being noticed and complimented! Whatever our phase in life, we like to feel and look good, and it’s always nice when someone notices. A couple of kind words definitely put a swing in our step.

We also like to be recognized for our achievements and for giving back to our community, our nation, and the world. This recognition hopefully inspires others to join with us and support the causes we hold dear. Cyndi Lauper is a longtime activist for equal rights, for gay rights, and for the fight against AIDS. Unquestionably, her very vocal commitment to these causes has raised awareness and inspired others to give time and dollars to these worthy endeavors.

At 57, Cyndi is still hot, both professionally and aesthetically—perhaps hotter than ever. You’ll enjoy Jill Brooke’s profile of this star who has no intention of slowing down. Did you know that Lauper is one of our neighbors, in Stamford?

Also in this issue, be sure to read what Jené Luciani has to say about style and fashion. This fall is not about black, black, and more black. Color is definitely in, uplifting our spirits. Lauper has always been about color, it’s part of the “fun” thing.

Yes, with all our responsibilities, we girls still want to have fun, even in the fall. As the season changes, we need to carry that carefree summer feeling forward. I’ve always wanted a streak of magenta in my hair. Perhaps now I’ll give it a try, but only if I’m wearing a black suit. After all, a girl might want to have fun, but a woman has to have limits.
